On 19 March, Atrys, together with both institutions, presented the awards for the first edition of the ‘Awards for the best Doctoral Thesis in the field of Radiation Oncology (Clinical, Physical or Biological part) of the year 2023, a distinction that recognises the best doctoral thesis in this field of research published during that year.

The award, asociated to the UB-Atrys Chair in Personalised Radiotherapy, is given to authors of a doctoral thesis read at one of the Faculties of Medicine in Catalonia, and whose results have been published in journals indexed in the Journal Citation Report (JCR) during the current year or in the 2 years prior to the reading of the thesis.

In this first edition of the Awards, the prizes for the best thesis have been awarded to a physicist and an oncologist. A prize that means their appointment as Corresponding Academicians of the RAMC. Dr. Carles Muñoz Montplet, a hospital radiophysicist at the Catalan Institute of Oncology, received the award for his thesis ‘Clinical impact of the calculation of the absorbed dose in external radiotherapy using a new algorithm based on the solution of the Bollzmann equation’. It has been presented by Dr. Guedea, director of the UB-Atrys Chair of Personalised Radiotherapy, academic of the RAMC and professor of the UB. The awarding of this prize is an important milestone in the history of the RAMC, as it means that Dr. Muñoz Montplet becomes the first hospital radiophysicist to become a member of the Academy. In the words of the award winner, ‘this award is an incentive to continue working at the service of society and an important milestone for the collaboration between physics and medicine within the RAMC’.

Dr. María Laplana Torres, radiation oncologist at the Hospital Clínic de Granollers, was recognised for her thesis ‘Partial breast irradiation with classic and modern brachytherapy as a treatment for breast cancer’. It was presented by Dr. Albert Biete, full member of the RAMC and Emeritus Professor of Radiology at the UB. During the ceremony, Dr. Laplana Torres thanked the recognition and all the people who have supported her over the years, stressing the value of such awards for the world of research: ‘We hope that from our research we can contribute to the treatment of many cancer patients. This is a boost to continue demonstrating the importance of finding new solutions.

Throughout his career, González Larriba has participated as principal investigator in more than 300 national and international clinical research projects and has collaborated in the publication of more than 60 scientific books and 300 articles in national and international journals. He is currently head of the Medical Oncology Section at the Hospital Universitario San Carlos in Madrid and is recognised as Level IV of the Professional Career (Maximum) by the Regional Ministry of Health of the Community of Madrid. 

The new agreement with the Viamed Santa Elena Hospital joins the more than 40 public and private hospitals in which Atrys offers oncology services, as well as the company’s own oncology centres in Spain, such as the Institute of Advanced Oncology (IOA) and the IMOR Institute, in Portugal and Mexico. With more than 20 years of clinical experience in university hospitals, López Martín is a specialist in Medical Oncology at the Hospital Universitario San Carlos (Madrid). He holds a PhD in Medicine from the Complutense University of Madrid and has completed postgraduate master’s degrees in Molecular Biology of Cancer at the European School of Oncology and in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at the National School of Health. Throughout his career he has held the position of assistant doctor in the Medical Oncology Service of the Hospital 12 de Octubre (Madrid) between 2007 and 2021. In this position he was responsible for the care of patients with melanoma, sarcomas or tumours refractory to standard treatments, as well as clinical and translational research in these pathologies.

He was also one of the promoters of the creation and certification of the Early Phase Clinical Trials Unit in Oncology, and of the Translational Oncology laboratory, within the Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria Hospital 12 de Octubre. In this laboratory, he co-led research projects on biomarkers and mechanisms of action and drug resistance, as well as on immuno-inflammatory responses associated with cancer.

In parallel, Dr. López Martín has participated as a researcher in multiple clinical trials for the pharmaceutical industry, as well as in independent clinical studies, and is a visiting researcher in projects at the Bioinformatics Unit of the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO). In 2014 he co-founded the Spanish Group for Immuno-Biological Therapies in Cancer (GÉTICA), of which he was president until 2021. He has also served as Medical Director of Oncology and Associate Director of Virology Strategic Development at PharmaMar.

In the educational field, he teaches on the Master’s Degree in Musculoskeletal Tumours (Universidad Europea de Madrid) and on the Master’s Degree in Bioinformatics and Data Science in Personalised Precision Medicine and Health (Escuela Nacional de Sanidad-Instituto de Salud Carlos III).

The Precision Medicine area is one of the company’s strategic pillars, comprising all diagnostic activity – telemedicine, nuclear medicine, pathological and molecular anatomy – and oncology treatment – medical oncology and advanced radiotherapy. Atrys Health, LID Editorial y Sanitas presentaron el miércoles en la Fundación Telefónica el tercer título de Health Tech, la primera colección en lengua española especializada en innovación tecnológica en salud, medicina y atención médica.

Bajo el título La salud digital y las redes sociales. Conectar para investigar, prevenir, compartir, cuidar y curar su autor Julio Mayol analiza cómo las redes están transformando la atención médica, la investigación y la salud pública en la era digital. En concreto, explora cómo se han convertido en una potente herramienta para la comunicación entre médico y paciente, la formación de nuevos profesionales y el empoderamiento de los pacientes. Detalla los desafíos y las cuestiones éticas y de privacidad que plantean, pero también aporta recomendaciones para un uso responsable de las redes en el ámbito de la salud.

Celebrada en el marco del ciclo El futuro que queremos de Fundación Telefónica, Manuel Pimentel, editor de Almuzara Libros y LID Editorial, inauguró el encuentro señalando que estamos ante una colección que facilita herramientas para “incorporar todas las innovaciones tecnológicas en el ámbito de la salud”, seguido del presidente de la Fundación de Investigación de Sanitas, el Dr. José Francisco Tomás, quien señaló que “para Sanitas es un privilegio poder formar parte de este proyecto”, más aun teniendo en cuenta su apuesta por la medicina digital.

La presentación del libro estuvo conducida por Santiago de Torres, presidente ejecutivo de Atrys, que también moderó la mesa redonda protagonizada por Julio Mayol, la periodista Mamen Mendizábal y Juan Luis Arsuaga, catedrático de Paleontología de la UCM y codirector de los importantes yacimientos pleistocenos de Atapuerca (Burgos), quien señaló que “el ser humano necesita relacionarse, pero la globalización dificulta el contacto humano, sin embargo, la tecnología y las redes sociales permiten paliar ese efecto dispersivo originado por la globalización”.

Sobre el papel que juegan las redes sociales en el mundo de la salud, el autor del libro Julio Mayol, destacó que permiten a los pacientes estar mucho más informados sobre sus dolencias, por lo que “están aplanando la asimetría de conocimiento entre el médico y el paciente. Nuestra labor como médicos debe variar de la imposición, al asesoramiento y ayuda en la toma de las mejores decisiones de nuestros enfermos”.  Además, añadió que los profesionales de la salud deben estar en las redes “si queremos posicionar información veraz y de calidad”.

Por su parte, la periodista Mamen Mendizábal explicó que la introducción de las redes sociales en el mundo de la ciencia ha permitido “la incorporación de la experiencia y los hechos probados, alejando la desinformación y el ruido gracias al uso de un lenguaje entendible por todos los ciudadanos”.

Santiago de Torres sostuvo que la sanidad se encuentra en un momento disruptivo en donde las nuevas tecnologías juegan un papel determinante para minimizar los riesgos y dificultades que afronta el sistema sanitario, y concluyó que “cuanto más sepamos todos de salud más eficiente será el sistema. Cada uno de nosotros tenemos la responsabilidad de cuidar de nuestra propia salud para no necesitar la Sanidad”.

La transformación tecnológica del sector sanitario
La colección de libros Health Tech, promovida por LID Editorial con el apoyo de Atrys, cuyo presidente ha dirigido el proyecto, y Sanitas, cuenta ya con tres títulos, orientados a analizar las tendencias actuales en el campo de la medicina:

La salud digital y las redes sociales. • Con esta operación, Atrys completará la desinversión de Conversia, iniciada el pasado diciembre con la venta del 24,9% de su participación, por un total de 55 millones de euros por el 100% de la compañía
  
• Esta desinversion permitirá a Atrys potenciar su actividad en las áreas de Medicina de Precisión y Medicina de Prevención siguiendo las líneas de su plan estratégico, y mantener su previsión de crecimiento tanto en ingresos como en EBITDA a doble dígito para este año
  
• La compañía también prevé emitir un bono convertible contingente en el mes de diciembre por un importe máximo de 25 millones de euros
  
• Con las dos operaciones anteriores se amortizarán un total de 43 millones de deuda financiera de Atrys. Esto permitirá alcanzar en 2023 una ratio de Deuda / EBITDA estimada de 3,5x y reducir en 3,85M € anuales los gastos financieros del Grupo

Atrys Health, S.A. (ATRY), compañía healthtech global que presta servicios de prevención, diagnóstico y tratamiento médico de precisión, pionera en telemedicina y tratamiento oncológico, anuncia que ha llegado a un acuerdo para la venta del 75,1% de Professional Group Conversia, S.L.U. (Conversia) por importe de 35 millones de euros al grupo inversor Arraigo Midco, S.L., sociedad controlada por Arraigo NW Segundo, S.A.U. (actual propietario del 24,9% de Conversia). Esta operación, junto a la venta del 24,9% de la filial llevada a cabo el pasado mes de diciembre de 2022, han permitido a Atrys vender el 100% de Conversia por un importe total de 55 millones de euros.

La venta de Conversia se enmarca en el plan estratégico de Atrys, que centra su actividad en los segmentos de negocio de Medicina de Precisión a través de las áreas de Oncología Médica y Diagnóstico, y Medicina de Prevención (mediante su red de más de 200 centros sanitarios en toda España que aporta su filial ASPY). Así, Atrys seguirá prestando servicios de Prevención y mantendrá la colaboración comercial con Conversia a través de ASPY.

Por otro lado, sujeto a la aprobación por parte de la Junta General Extraordinaria de Accionistas, el Grupo tiene intención de emitir un bono convertible contingente por un importe máximo de 25 millones de euros, que no computará como deuda a efectos del cálculo de los ratios de covenants financieros. Dicho bono podrá convertirse hasta la fecha de su vencimiento (6,5 años) en acciones de la compañía a un precio mínimo de 7€ por acción.

Tras la ejecución de las operaciones mencionadas, el objetivo de la compañía es amortizar deuda financiera por valor de 43 millones de euros antes de finalizar el ejercicio 2023. Esto permitirá alcanzar en el ejercicio 2023 una ratio de Deuda Financiera Neta / EBITDA Ajustado estimada de 3,5x y supondrá un ahorro de 3,85 millones de euros anuales en los gastos financieros del Grupo.

Como consecuencia de la desinversión en Conversia y su consiguiente salida del perímetro consolidado del Grupo, Atrys ha anunciado la actualización de su guidance orgánico (sin incluir adquisiciones y venta de activos) para el ejercicio 2023, situándose en unos ingresos de entre 202 y 208 millones de euros y 45-46 millones de EBITDA ajustado. Este guidance reafirma el crecimiento de las áreas estratégicas de la compañía en el 2023 tanto en ingresos como en EBITDA a doble dígito. En palabras de Santiago de Torres, presidente ejecutivo de Atrys, “la culminación de la venta de Conversia impulsará el crecimiento orgánico de las áreas estratégicas de nuestro negocio, que abarcan desde el diagnóstico temprano, el tratamiento médico de precisión y la medicina de prevención. Asimismo, los fondos obtenidos de esta desinversión, junto a los que obtendremos con la emisión del bono convertible contingente, se destinarán a reducir la deuda financiera del Grupo, lo que nos permitirá centrarnos en consolidar nuestro liderazgo en el sector, asentar nuestro posicionamiento geográfico y potenciar el uso de la Inteligencia Artificial, una herramienta fundamental para crear valor y crecer como compañía”.

CUARTA EDICIÓN DEL BARÓMETRO DE EMPRESAS DE LA SALUD EN ESPAÑA

• Sólo el 26% creen que el desarrollo de la salud digital en España es alto o muy alto, doce puntos menos que en el año anterior, y crece del 8% al 21% la ratio de las compañías que creen que este desarrollo es bajo o muy bajo
  
• La colaboración público-privada permitiría, sobre todo, reducir listas de espera, acelerar la atención médica y reducir costes por la detección temprana de enfermedades

Las empresas españolas de la salud empeoran la percepción sobre el desarrollo tecnológico del sector en España. En 2023, sólo el 26% de los agentes de este negocio sostienen que el desarrollo de la salud digital en España es alto o muy alto, doce puntos menos que el año anterior. En concreto, tan solo el 2% de las compañías encuestadas creen que el grado de desarrollo que tiene la salud digital en el país es muy alto, mientras que un 24% lo califica de alto, frente al 36% registrado en la anterior edición.

Por el contrario, se incrementa la ratio de empresas que creen que este desarrollo es bajo o muy bajo. Si en el 2022 este grupo llegaba al 8% del total, en el 2023 asciende al 21%. Además, el 2% de las compañías califican la implantación de la salud digital en España como muy baja, cuando en el año anterior este grupo no llegaba al 1% del total.

Estas son algunas de las conclusiones de la cuarta edición del Barómetro de Empresas de la Salud en España, un informe realizado por PlantaDoce y que ha contado con el apoyo de Atrys Health (BME:ATRY), compañía healthtech global que presta servicios de prevención, diagnóstico y tratamiento médico de precisión, pionera en telemedicina y tratamiento oncológico. El Barómetro, realizado a partir de una encuesta a cerca de 300 empresas de la industria de la salud en España, es pionero en recoger la opinión sobre la marcha del conjunto del sector y de la economía por parte de los líderes empresariales de la salud en sentido amplio, desde la industria farmacéutica hasta el ámbito asistencial, la tecnología médica, la investigación o la atención a la dependencia.

El estudio ha sido presentado hoy en un evento digital que ha contado con la participación de Santiago de Torres, presidente ejecutivo de Atrys Health, y de Marisa Merino, directora gerente de OSI Bidasoa Osakidetza.

A pesar del retroceso que percibe el sector en el desarrollo de la salud digital, las empresas están dando pasos adelante en esta dirección. En concreto, durante este año sube del 86% al 91% la ratio de empresas que afirma haber puesto en marcha nuevas iniciativas encaminadas a una mayor digitalización. 

Sobre la digitalización, Santiago de Torres afirma que “los médicos debemos asumir que no podemos hacerlo todo y aprovechar mejor las ventajas que ofrecen las últimas tecnologías. Por ejemplo, si el cardiólogo hace una ecografía a un paciente, tarda una media de quince minutos, si un técnico bien formado fuese el encargado de tomar la imagen y el cardiólogo se limitase a revisarla, el especialista podría informar cada hora a unos quince pacientes. Por tanto, hay que empoderar y formar a otros profesionales de la salud en el ámbito de las nuevas tecnologías para optimizar el tiempo y ser más eficientes”.

Asimismo, como novedad en esta edición, la encuesta también aborda la necesidad de incorporar la inteligencia artificial en el ámbito sanitario. Las conclusiones indican que el 92% de los encuestados coincide en que se debería apostar por el desarrollo e implantación de esta tecnología en el campo de la salud de igual forma, o incluso con más intensidad, que en el resto de los sectores.

El Barómetro también apunta a cierta contención en el optimismo de las empresas del sector de la salud con relación a la evolución de su negocio. Mientras que en el 2022 el 81% de las compañías elevó su facturación, en esta edición la ratio de empresas que prevén elevar su cifra de negocio alcanza el 70%. Además, el 6% reconoce que su facturación descenderá en comparación con el año anterior.

Esta moderación del optimismo por parte de las empresas en relación con el aumento de su facturación se aprecia también en las previsiones en torno a la creación de empleo. A pesar de que la gran mayoría de las empresas del sector incrementaron sus magnitudes de negocio en 2022, sólo el 44% aumentó su plantilla durante ese ejercicio, frente al 69% en 2021. Para 2023, el 51% de las empresas prevé incrementar el número de trabajadores, pero sólo el 9% espera hacerlo de forma sustancial (cinco puntos menos que en el año anterior).

En relación a la coyuntura actual, cerca de la mitad de las empresas de la industria sanitaria percibe que la situación económica del ámbito de la salud será buena en 2024, pero un 20% de los operadores tienen una visión más negativa: creen que la situación general del sector será mala o muy mala. En este sentido, sólo el 12% de las empresas aprecian un aumento claro del gasto de las administraciones públicas en salud, frente al 45% que no aprecian mejoras. En cuanto al consumo privado, el 36% de las compañías creen que aumentará en 2023, frente al 19% que sostiene que no se percibirá un incremento de esta variable. Pese a ello, la mayoría de las empresas encuestadas (el 67% del total) continúa aumentando el ritmo de inversión, frente a un 26% que lo mantendrá estable este año y un 7% que lo reducirá. 

Colaboración público-privada, asignatura pendiente

Por último, de las conclusiones de esta edición del Barómetro de Empresas de la Salud en España se desprende que las compañías del sector valoran de forma más negativa las actuaciones de la administración pública en los aspectos que afectan a la salud privada. Sólo el 6% de las empresas califican estas actuaciones de “buenas”, mientras que un 53% señalan que son “regulares” y el 41% restante, “malas” o “muy malas”.

La colaboración público-privada es, en este sentido, la gran asignatura pendiente del sector. La edición 2023 del Barómetro recoge la opinión de las empresas sobre la utilidad que tendría un modelo más colaborativo entre empresas y administraciones. En este sentido, el 70% de las compañías cree que más cooperación entre agentes públicos y privados permitiría reducir listas de espera, mientras que el 66% considera que habría una mayor rapidez en la atención médica y el 64% señala que gracias a esta alianza se reducirían costes por detección temprana de enfermedades.

Sobre la a colaboración Público Privada, Marina Merino señala que “la colaboración entre las empresas, los centros tecnológicos, la administración, y resto de agentes del sector es absolutamente necesaria. Desde la Administración podemos orientar sobre las necesidades en salud de la población pero necesitamos el apoyo privado para que se produzca un verdadero avance en el desarrollo de soluciones en salud digital”.

• Esta segunda edición reconoce el potencial de tres líneas de investigación publicadas en revistas científicas de ámbito internacional que abordan respectivamente soluciones para mejorar la eficacia de la radioterapia del cerebro, la viabilidad de los análisis genómicos para el tratamiento clínico y el impacto de la radioterapia en pacientes con cáncer de mama

Atrys, compañía healthtech global que presta servicios de prevención, diagnóstico y tratamiento médico de precisión y pionera en telemedicina y radioterapia de última generación, y la Universidad de Barcelona (UB), reconocen los tres artículos de investigación más innovadores en el campo de la oncología radioterápica en la II edición de los ‘Premios de Investigación en Radioterapia Personalizada’. Estos galardones, vinculados a la Cátedra UB Atrys creada en 2021, premian la excelencia y la innovación en la investigación y tienen como objetivo impulsar la difusión de conocimientos en la oncología radioterápica, un área de trabajo de especial relevancia para seguir progresando en el tratamiento del cáncer.

El acto de entrega de los galardones tuvo lugar el pasado jueves 26 de octubre, en el marco del Simposio SEOR 2023 celebrado en Madrid. Durante la primera parte del encuentro, el profesor Ivan Ritcher Vogelius realizó una conferencia magistral sobre el uso del Big data para determinar los efectos secundarios en 10.000 pacientes tratados con radioterapia en Dinamarca. Una sesión que estuvo moderada por el profesor Ferran Guedea, director de Oncología Radioterápica del Instituto Catalán de Oncología (ICO), catedrático de la Universidad de Barcelona y director de la Catedra UB-Atrys de Radioterapia personalizada.

En la segunda parte del encuentro, se presentaron las tres publicaciones premiadas. Esta parte de la jornada estuvo moderada por el doctor Marco Panichi, director del IOA (Instituto de Oncología Avanzada) de Atrys y Sanitas y co-director de la cátedra, y contó con la presencia de los investigadores e investigadoras premiados. El primer premio, dotado con 5.000 euros, fue entregado a Manuel Valiente Cortés por su investigación en torno a las soluciones para mejorar la eficacia de la radioterapia del cerebro. El segundo premio de 3.000 euros fue otorgado a Guadalupe Álvarez Cifuentes por su trabajo sobre la biopsia líquida y los análisis genómicos para el tratamiento clínico de pacientes con cáncer oligometastásico y en estadio temprano. Por último, el tercer premio, dotado con 1.000 euros, fue entregado a Meritxell Arenas Prat por su estudio sobre el impacto de la radioterapia en los pacientes con cáncer de mama.

Según indica el profesor Guedea “esta es una cátedra para potenciar la investigación traslacional en Oncología Radioterápica y que ha demostrado este año la madurez de diferentes grupos de Investigación en España, por la calidad de las publicaciones seleccionadas. Recomiendo leer dichos artículos para conocer la calidad de dichas investigaciones. Además, esta iniciativa permite acercar más la Investigación traslacional a las sociedades científicas, como en este caso la SEOR”.

También señala Víctor González Rumayor, director de I+D e IA de Atrys, que estos premios “son una eficaz plataforma para promover la investigación en el ámbito de la oncología radioterápica, y más concretamente, en el campo de la radioterapia traslacional. Un área con recursos limitados y de gran importancia, ya que permite, a partir de un profundo conocimiento de la biología del tumor y su ambiente, diseñar la planificación terapéutica más adecuada para cada paciente en cada momento, objetivo clave para nuestra compañía”.

Seguir avanzando en el tratamiento del cáncer

La Cátedra UB – Atrys de Radioterapia Personalizada tiene por objetivo promover la investigación de excelencia, la docencia especializada y la difusión de conocimientos en el campo de la oncología radioterápica de precisión en tres líneas principales: la personalización de los tratamientos con radioterapia mediante estudios de radiosensibilidad y de radiotoxicidad; el diagnóstico predictivo previo al tratamiento de radioterapia de alta precisión, y el efecto de la radioterapia en la respuesta inmune frente al cáncer.

Trabajo: Stratification of radiosensitive brain metastases based on an actionable S100A9/RAGE resistance mechanism, Brain Metastasis Group.

Un artículo de investigación en torno a las nuevas soluciones viables, objetivos y biomarcadores que mejoren la eficacia de la WBRT (whole-brain radiotherapy), en pacientes con metástasis cerebral. Proporciona un marco molecular para la personalización de la WBRT y la combinación con un radio sensibilizador que equilibra el beneficio terapéutico y la toxicidad.

Trabajo: Clinical utility of liquid biopsy and integrative genomic profiling in early-stage and oligometastatic cancer patients treated with radiotherapy.

Un trabajo de investigación que aborda la utilidad de la biopsia líquida y los análisis genómicos basados en la línea germinal, el tumor y el ADN libre de células circulantes para el tratamiento clínico de pacientes con cáncer oligometastásico y en estadio temprano tratados con radioterapia de precisión.

Trabajo: Gradient Boosting Machine Identified Predictive Variables for Breast Cancer Patients Pre- and Post-Radiotherapy: Preliminary Results of an 8-Year Follow-Up Study.

Este artículo de investigación explora la respuesta de los pacientes con cáncer de mama a la radioterapia con el objetivo de analizar soluciones viables tras la observación de que algunos pacientes pueden desarrollar progresión de la enfermedad, un segundo cáncer primario o pueden sucumbir a la enfermedad.
