  • Health and Social Media: Connecting to Research, Prevent, Share, Care, and Heal is a book that offers a comprehensive look at how social media is transforming healthcare, research, and public health in the digital age
  • This is the third book in the Health Tech collection, the first collection in Spanish specialized in technological innovation in health, medicine and medical care
  • In Mexico, access to and use of technologies is a pending issue, and in the field of health, the use of digital tools is especially important

On February 1, Atrys, LID Editorial and Bupa presented in Mexico La salud y las redes sociales: connect to research, prevent, share, care and heal, a book that explores how social networks are transforming the medical field as a tool that empowers the population, facilitates communication between doctor and patient, and contributes to the training of new professionals.

The book written by Dr. Julio Mayol is the third title in Health Tech, the first Spanish-language collection specializing in technological innovation in health, medicine and healthcare. The collection is led by Santiago de Torres, CEO of Atrys. “The world of healthcare is at a disruptive moment and this collection was created with the aim of providing rigorous and, at the same time, informative information on how technologies are transforming the field of medicine and where the future of the healthcare sector is heading,” said Dr. Santiago de Torres.

The presentation of the book, held at the Bupa Mexico headquarters, was attended by Dr. Santiago de Torres, Juana Ramirez, a recognized industry opinion leader, Dr. Julio Mayol, and Dr. Xavier Tello, a physician and public health specialist, who formed the panel discussion on the role of social networks in the healthcare system during the digital era. “While the positive role played by social networks is analyzed, this third installment also details the challenges and ethical issues of privacy that they present, providing recommendations for the responsible use of these tools in the field of healthcare,” said author Dr. Julio Mayol, who is a surgeon and professor at the Complutense University of Madrid.

Dr. Xavier Tello, an analyst specializing in public health, added that this type of publication is an excellent opportunity to look at our own community: “We know that in Mexico access to and use of technologies is a pending issue and in the field of health, the use of digital tools that facilitate collaborative work is especially important, as pointed out in the 2023 report ‘Health at a Glance’ of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)”.

“Social networks have long ceased to be a simple means of personal interaction with friends, to become the most powerful and democratic of the media. Health, for its part, must compete every day with thousands of daily messages of all kinds that saturate the population and are often more attractive than a prevention, information or self-care campaign. The challenge for all of us who participate in the sector lies in the adoption of new communication strategies and the reward, in the high impact that social networks allow us to achieve,” said Juana Ramirez, President of the Steering Committee of Atrys Mexico.

Santiago de Torres concluded that “the more we all know about health, the more efficient the system will be. Each one of us has the responsibility to take care of our own health so that we do not need healthcare”.

Also present at the launch of this third issue of the Health Tech collection was Fernando Lledó, CEO of Bupa Mexico, who inaugurated the meeting at the Polanco facilities, “At Bupa Mexico we are excited to be part of this initiative, especially because our goal is to improve medical care through innovation and to offer the Mexican population the best tools for prevention and health care”. Manuel Pimentel, director of LID Editorial, followed, who pointed out that “This collection provides tools to improve the field of health through technology”.

This collection, published by LID Editorial with the support of Atrys and Bupa, already has three of the six titles that will be published with the aim of analyzing current trends in the field of medicine: Biotechnology. Solutions for the health of the future and the well-being of the planet, Digital health and the new forms of medical care and the recent presentation of Digital health and social networks. Connecting to research, prevent, share, care and heal.
