RAP-ID19

Diagnostic device for rapid detection of COVID-19

The global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the absence of a highly sensitive PoC diagnostic method that directly detects the virus, without prior sample preparation steps, in order to carry out a rapid and accurate diagnosis of the virus on a large scale. As a result, PCR tests have been favoured, with a consequent reduction of diagnostic capacity in absolute terms (fewer tests) due to the intrinsic limitations of the method, coupled with the lack of reagent supply and the saturation of authorised clinical laboratories.

The use of biosensors, especially those based on field effect transistors (FETs), is an important alternative, thanks to their ability to make highly sensitive and instantaneous measurements from small sample amounts.

The use of biosensors to detect COVID-19 is an important alternative to PCR tests.

Due to its high electronic conductivity and large specific area, graphene has been applied in the production of FET-based analytical devices (GFETs). The main objective of this project is the development of a fully integrated monolayer graphene PoC biosensor based on FET technology for the rapid and accurate detection of SARS-CoV-2 on a large scale and using samples collected with nasopharyngeal swabs. The proposed prototype design will allow for a rapid and efficient scale-up to industrial production levels.

To achieve the objectives

2020

To achieve the objectives of the project, a collaboration agreement has been established between the Nanobiotechnology for Life Sciences Group of the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), the Nanoelectronics, Graphene and Two-Dimensional Materials Group of the University of Granada (UGR), and Atrys Health.

The project is funded by the Supera Covid-19 Fund, constituted by Crue Universidades Españolas, CSIC, and Banco Santander.
